Theatre inspired by Dance

Jem Treays will be creating and directing a new production with Theatr Iolo, devising a highly physical production that takes ideas from ghost stories of Japan. The company will be carrying out research with young people and exploring the highly emotive stories of powerful women and magical creatures in Japanese folklore. Work on the new production will begin in Summer 2010.

Entdeckungen / Discover German Theatre

As part of the Sherman Theatre’s Springboard Festival, on 7th June 2009 Theatr Iolo ran a workshop for actors, writers and directors exploring several German plays for young people.  During the evening rehearsed readings were presented of 2 German plays in translation.

KLAMM'S WAR by Kai Hensel ( translated by Mario Golden and Andreas Robertz)
Directed by Caroline Bunce. Performed by John Norton.

Klamm enters his classroom and is confronted by a wall of silence. His students have declared war, blaming him for what happened to a fellow pupil. Can Klamm defend himself?  This elegant award winning monologue grapples with the constraints of institutions which turn pupils and teachers into mortal enemies.

VISITING KATT AND FREDDA by Ingeborg von Zadow ( translated by the author)
Directed by Kevin Lewis. Performers - Hannah McPake, Lucy Rivers and Eiry Hughes.

A comical tragic study of the joys and terrors of friendship.

Following the readings there was a post show discussion with Henning Fangauf whose job is to support and promote German writing for young people.

Reality Bytes …

is a new physical dance theatre production, inspired by themes of REALITY versus VIRTUAL REALITY, youth culture, computer games, alter-egos and technology.

Theatr Iolo is delighted to be working with Choreographer and Director Kylie Ann Smith, the successful applicant of their current Emergent Artist Programme, which supports artists new to the world of theatre for children and young people to develop their own ideas and projects.

Kylie has been working with 5 professional dancers as well as pupils from Barry Comprehensive School.  Excited by the impulse and commitment behind the movement of the young people, Kylie has developed choreography from their raw and guttural energy, giving an edge to the professional composition of Reality Bytes.

Kylie describes Reality Bytes as “a gang of computer game addicts unexpectantly get sucked into a world of virtual reality, where Street Fighter meets Space Invaders! The gamers' alter-egos battle it out through each Bonus Level to try and complete the game…will they ever escape before the Game is over?”

“Reality Bytes” culminated in a free outdoor dance theatre, site-responsive performance in King Square, Barry, on Saturday 4th July. The audience included Jane Hutt AM for the Vale of Glamorgan and The Vale of Glamorgan Council Mayor, Councillor Emlyn Williams, who are always keen to support creativity by young people.
