Schools sum up what we do
We invited schools to tell us what a visit from Theatr Iolo really meant. We were thrilled to see the impact it had on their young people, as it very much summed up the ethos of the company and the importance of live theatre tailor made for children.

Theatr Iolo delivers Wow Factor
Children from Moorland Primary School, Splott, gather round Theatr Iolo’s Glenys Evans playing her character as Ono Matopoeia – a fierce but forgetful children’s author – at Cardiff’s Central Library today.
Ms Evans’ performance marked the launch of Digging for Words, a display of children’s story-telling and artwork inspired by in-school workshops run by Theatr Iolo in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.
A total of 31 schools took part and the display will run until the end of April. Children’s librarian Heather Noble said: “We now have a wonderful collection of words and pictures. I hope the children and their friends and families will come in and have a look.”
Teachers Angela Poole and Siwan Seymour described the workshops as “inspirational”.
Jane Jenkins, headteacher at Moorland Primary, said: “It’s brought about a real enthusiasm to do story-writing, which is lovely to see. It’s given the children a wow factor!”
Schools taking part include:
Allensbank, Barry Island, Bryn Celyn, Bryn Deri, Bryn Hafod, Coryton, Eglwys Wen, Fairwater, Hawthorn Junior, High Street, Llangan, Llanilltud Fawr, Moorland, Ninian Park, Oakfield (Cardiff), Peterston-S-Ely CW, Rhydypennau, St Bernadettes's RC, St Joseph's RC, St Mary the Virgin, St Mary’s RC, St Marys Catholic, St Mellons, St Pauls, St Philip Evans RC, Stacey, Sully, Tredegarville CW, Windsor Clive and Y Bont Faen Primary.

Charles Way wins German Children’s Theatre Award
The most important German prize for dramatic literature for children endowed by
the Federal Republic of Germany was awarded this year to the Wales based
playwright Charles Way for his play “Verschwunden”/ “Missing”.
The play was commissioned and developed jointly by Theatr Iolo and Consol Theater in Gelsenkirchen in Germany where it was produced in November 2008. Theatr Iolo produced “Missing” in September 2009 touring to schools and colleges in South Wales as well as Sherman Theatre, Taliesin Arts Centre, Torch Theatre and the Egg in Bath.
The prize is worth 10,000 Euros. The play was selected by the jury out of 153 applications.
The jury explained its decision as follows: “Missing” is a courageous and extraordinary play regarding both its topic and its formal structure.
Charles Way has succeeded in writing a contemporary version of the fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” which is turned into an explosive and contemporary story about poverty and neglect and their illustration by modern media. The German Children’s Theatre Award 2010 is given to a play which gives a strong and persuasive impulse for new writing in the field of children’s theatre.
The prize was given to Charles Way on 2nd December 2010 in Frankfurt by State Secretary ,Josef Hecken from the Ministry of Youth of the Federal Republic of Germany. In his speech he underlined: “ We strongly believe that dramatic literature and theatre for children is a substantial part of aesthetic education for children and young people . For this reason our Ministry will continue to support new writing for Theatre for Young Audiences”.
