Free theatre show for families in Cardiff city centre this August!

Children’s theatre company, Theatr Iolo, have joined forces with FOR Cardiff to bring performances of their outdoor theatre show HOOF! to families in Cardiff city centre this summer.

Following the success of recent performances at venues and festivals throughout Wales, Theatr Iolo will now perform their outdoor family show HOOF!, to families for free outside St David’s Dewi Sant for nine performances from 16 - 18 August.

Starring three tap-dancing deer, the show has been created in collaboration with Kitsch & Sync, a company most well-known for their street theatre walk-about performances at festivals, and will be performed in Cardiff thanks to funding from the City Ambition Fund, that has been developed by FOR Cardiff.

Adrian Field, Executive Director of FOR Cardiff, said, HOOF! is one of a range of projects funded through our newly developed City Ambition Fund. Bringing cultural experiences and family friendly activities to the city centre is a key part of our current work and key to the future of cities in general. We’re looking forward to experiencing some great live theatre on Hills Street”

Lee Lyford, Theatr Iolo’s Artistic Director, saidHOOF! has been entertaining families across South Wales since December 2020 and we’re thrilled that, thanks to FOR Cardiff’s City Ambition Fund, families are able to enjoy this joyful theatre show in the very centre of Cardiff for free. “

Audiences are invited to join three little deer as they stumble across an old, abandoned theatre. Investigating their new find, this cheeky trio quickly find themselves in spotlight and treading the boards for the very first time! Will the toe-tapping friends be able to bring the long-forgotten theatre back to life? Or will the lights be turned off forever?

HOOF! will take place from 16 – 18 August at 12pm, 1.30pm and 3pm outside St David’s Dewi Sant in Cardiff, in the area between Cosy Club and Miller & Carter on Hills Street. HOOF! is a free performance and families can simply turn up to catch the show.

HOOF! is a 20-minute outdoor performance, which was created for families with children aged 4+, but everyone is welcome and all ages seem to enjoy the show.

The Theatr Iolo Travelling Theatre was created in 2020 thanks to a capital grant from the Arts Council of Wales’ cultural recovery fund. The grant allowed the company to buy a second-hand exhibition trailer and transform it into a travelling theatre in order to take live performance direct to local communities.
